Coconut Oil Deodorant and Body Moisturizing Bar

I haven’t used deodorant all summer. Want to hang out?
Actually, I’ve only been accused of smelling a bit funky one time, and I’ve asked my family plenty.
Wow, it’s hot today. Smell my pits!
That was hard work. I’m sweaty. Smell my pits!
So far, I’ve only gotten one P.U.. (Apparently homemade deodorant doesn’t work as well when you wear synthetic fabrics. Then again, conventional deodorants don’t work as well with those types of fabrics either.)
I’d seen several recipes online, but many used ingredients that I didn’t have lying around the house. I wasn’t motivated enough to spend my money on a bunch things that may or may not make a good product and that I had no other use for.
The recipes that seemed the most promising were mainly coconut oil. One day I was using my homemade coconut oil moisturizing bar and thought, what have I got to lose (except people wanting to stand close to me in elevators)? I rubbed some under my arms, and began my experiment.
Eureka (not to be confused with you-reek-a)! It works.
My pits don’t stink.
My skin is feels soft and lovely.
I didn’t have to buy anything new.
This might be my new best friend.

Want to make your own? Of course you do!
Here’s how:
Place your jar of coconut oil in a couple of inches of hot water to melt.
Coconut Oil Moisturizing Bar (and deodorant)

Pour some, say 1/2 a cup or so, into one of those thin plastic storage cups.
Coconut Oil Moisturizing Bar (and deodorant)

Add a few drops of essential oils. I like lavender and tea-tree, both for the scent and for the skin healing properties (great for freshly shaven underarms).
Coconut Oil Moisturizing Bar (and deodorant)

Allow to cool and solidify.

Pop it out of the container.

Rub on skin.
Ooh and ahh.
Put the bar down and rub oil into your skin (and underarms). Allow to absorb for a few moments before getting dressed.
Note: Coconut oil is liquid above 76°.   Now, I know it’s summer. If you don’t have AC and your bar stays soft, you can either just scoop a small amount out to use, or keep your container in the fridge.

Now, who wants to stand next to me on the elevator?

  4. I have to laugh – I’ve been doing this the last few days and just found your post. I had to google using coconut oil as deodorant to see if I was just making stuff up or it was legit. I’m sooo going to add the lavender oil!

    • I’m cracking up because I had to do the same thing. I tried it on a whim and it worked, but I still needed google to tell me I wasn’t crazy. We can validate each other. 🙂

  6. Hi Heidi! Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving such a nice comment! I loved your “no poo” suggestion… LOL… and then I of course had to poke around, and then I came upon your homemade deodorant recipe. This is so cool I don’t even know where to start! I stopped using conventional deodorants years ago, but since then I have mostly fought with those “crystal” deodorants. You know the kind–the hard rock-like stick that you have to run under water before putting on your underarms? Ick. Didn’t work and was very inconvenient and unpleasant to use!

I actually found a liquid version of those that works REALLY well… I buy it at the local Whole Foods… it’s called Amazing Thai Crystal Deodorant Roll-On. It has the same minerals as the crystal but rolls on as a liquid. It’s FABULOUS… let me just tell you… I apply it to clean skin right after a shower and I literally smell NOTHING!

But you know, sometimes things start working and then stop all of a sudden, so I am going to keep your homemade deodorant recipe on hand. I’m even going to print it out for a friend of mine who doesn’t use conventional deodorant but hasn’t found anything else that she likes either. What a great tip!

I’m so glad you stopped by my blog and left a comment! It’s nice to meet you! I hope you can drop in again sometime!

    Smiles, Jenn

  7. Briliant idea, Can you suggest a cheap place to get the ingredients in the UK please, I bet Holland and Barrett charge an arm and a leg for these ingredients.

    Cheers

  8. So… If you start to sweat and the coconut oil got onto your clothes, would it stain?
