The Reading Chair

The Reading Chair

Oh my goodness, curling up in a cozy chair with a book sounds lovely, doesn’t it?
Picture a gray, cloudy day outside. Inside, there is a fire in the fireplace, something warm and rich cooking away in your crockpot, a deliciously good book, and hours to yourself. I’ve had that reading experience exactly twice in my life and it was just as heavenly as it sounds.
Neither one of those dream-reader days happened in the last week. What with one must-do and another fulling my days, the best reading experience I had was a partial chapter in the doctor’s office waiting room. Still, that’s better than nothing, right?

What I’ve Been Reading
Homeless Bird
A friend gave me this book and I found it to be quite an interesting read. It is set in India, but I couldn’t tell if it was set in the current time, or several years ago. When food becomes scarce for her family, 13 year old Koly is pushed into an arranged marriage, then quickly widowed. She is young, alone, undervalued by society and largely uneducated. This story follows her as she learns to make her way in the world.
I thought this gave a sad, but interesting perspective on how girls and women are viewed in some other parts of the world. This was written for young readers and Newt has expressed some interest in reading it next. I hope she does; I’d love to discuss it with her.

Little Men
Okay, I didn’t actually read this book in the last week. I read it a couple of months ago, but I did reread my notes and write a paper on it. Want to read it? Here is is: Mentoring Lessons from Louisa May Alcott’s Little Men

What I’m Reading to Newt
We were looking for a slightly creepy, fun Halloweeny read. The Graveyard Book: A Novel seems to fit the bill. It’s essentially a coming of age story where we see Nobody “Bod” Owens try to figure out who he is and where he fits in the world. Not an easy thing for a boy being raised in a graveyard by ghost parents and what may be a vampire as a guardian.
Since the opening scene is the not graphic, but murder nonetheless, of Bod’s family, I wouldn’t recommend this for younger or particularly sensitive children.
But we are enjoying it.

What Newt is Reading
Anything and everything she can find about dogs. As much as I feel not-quite-ready, I’m afraid that we may be needing to bring home another dog soon. Not as a replacement, but as a new friend.
Maybe even this weekend…

Let's chat, shall we?
