The Reading Chair

Our library has a room that may be the closest to heaven I’ve ever known. It has comfortable chairs, large oak tables, lots of natural light, free wireless internet, and best of all: absolute silence. Newt and I took our books there earlier this week and spent a happy hour enjoying the stillness. That is, after I appeased my inner librarian and shushed a couple of chatty men. Ahhh… heavenly.

What I’ve Been Reading
Unplanned: The Dramatic True Story of a Former Planned Parenthood Leader’s Eye-Opening Journey across the Life Line
This book was loaned to me by a friend. I have not finished it yet, but I’m finding it to be an interesting read. I appreciate that the author does not paint those on either side of the abortion issue as “the bad guy”, but instead, as people trying to live their own convictions and with more in common than they might at first believe. I’m curious to see how her story ends.

What I’ve Been Reading to Newt
We are between books right now, but have been spending some extra time reading about the Mayans, Aztecs and Incans in The Story of the World and The Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of World History. Nothing like a little human sacrifice to add some interest to your history studies!

What Newt Has Been Reading
Reading Harry Potter has reignited Newt’s interest in mythical creatures. She revisited some old favorites this week:
Greece! Rome! Monsters!
D’aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths
Strong Stuff: Herakles and His Labors

I love how even a little bit of knowledge about the classics will broaden and deepen your understanding of other works of literature.  It’s really satifying to see my daughter start to discover that.
And yes, I did just refer to Harry Potter as literature. I don’t see an issue with that. Do you?

Have you read anything good this week?

  1. I’d love to read your final review of Unplanned when you finish it! It’s one I think I’d like to read, but my reading time is so limited that I try to make highly informed choices.
