Summer Rules 2012

Newt, June 2008

I feel like I am standing at the top of a very steep hill. One step below me is a slick orange slippery-slide. As soon as I get on, the entire summer will whiz by, ending with a splash in September.
We have big plans and a full calendar (most of which belong to Newt): swim team, visiting family, sleep-away camp, theater camp, camping, BBQs, picnics, rodeos, parades, baseball games, and fireworks.
It’s going to be awesome.
To make sure we don’t neglect the important things, Newt and I have created the following:

  • Read, write, and do a little math every day.
  • Don’t neglect the garden.
  • Create a new flavor of homemade ice-cream.
  • Go outside every day, rain or shine.
  • Newt makes dinner at least once a week.
  • Chores before play.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • With exception of Saturday, no tv until after dinner. On Saturday, no tv until after chores.
  • Go someplace new at least twice a month.
  • Have Family Date Night every week.
  • Every time we go the Farmer’s Market, buy something unusual.
  • Always keep money for the ice-cream man.

What are your plans this summer?

  1. Hmmmm….
    1. Clean clothes daily. (three boys make this a necessary rule)
    2. No tv after 9am (hopefully I will be feeling better and be Normal in the a.m.)
    3. Go outside. Go outside. Go outside.
    4. Except the bathroom… Go inside.
    5. Don’t neglect the chickens or the berries.
    6. Go to the beach at least once a week.
    7. Play with friends. Even mama.

    • I love #4. You have to make those kind of rules when you have boys. 🙂

    • That’s a good one. I try, but I break it every year.

  3. Since sunscreen and burning keep coming up, have you seen these posts on sunscreen and sun exposure? One is from Mommypotomas- http://www.mommypotamus.com/confessions-of-a-sunbather/. And the other is from Kitchen Stewardship- http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2010/07/20/natural-sunscreen-review-do-mineral-based-sunblocks-work-2/. It’s information that has really changed how I handle sun exposure in our family this summer. We haven’t needed to use sunscreen yet. We’ve been getting gradual exposure and taking our cod liver oil and coconut oil every day. Just thought I would share:)

We’re not out of school yet (one more week!) and I need to spend this week working out some rules and a routine to keep us on track. We actually have absolutely nothing planned for this summer, and I am thrilled. I just want to spend time working on things around here and actually get to keep up the garden and ENJOY it!

    • I’ve seen Kitchen Stewardship’s and have been meaning to look at it again. I’ll have to look at Mommypotamus’s too. I am not a sunscreen wearer – I always forget, but with Newt doing swim team, I thought I’d better work on it. Thanks!
Your unscheduled summer sounds lovely. Enjoy!
